Why Choose a Shower Door?

A custom shower door is more than just a functional addition to your bathroom; it's a statement piece that enhances the overall aesthetic. Unlike standard shower curtains, a glass door adds a touch of modern elegance and sophistication. They create a seamless, open feel, making your bathroom appear larger and more inviting. Plus, they're easier to clean and maintain, resisting mold and mildew buildup.

Things to Consider When Planning for a Shower Door

#1 BLOCKING

Dude Adding Blocking_edited.jpg

For most shower door installations, blocking within the wall is a critical requirement. This is because glass shower doors, especially frameless designs, are heavy and exert significant stress on the mounting points. Proper blocking, typically consisting of solid wood framing installed behind the finished wall surface, provides the necessary structural support to securely anchor the door hardware, ensuring safety and long-term stability.

#2 SIZE & LAYOUT

Types of Shower Doors_edited.jpg

The size and layout of your bathroom are key factors. You'll want to think about how much space you have around the shower area – you'll need enough room for the door to swing open comfortably, if it's a swinging door. Also, consider the shape of your shower base. Is it square, rectangular, or a neo-angle? This will influence the type of door that works best.

#3 OBSTACLES

When planning for a shower, it's crucial to make sure there's nothing that could get in the way of the shower door opening and closing smoothly. Think about things like towel racks, vanities, or even the toilet – anything too close to the shower opening could be a problem. Also, check for any windows or ledges inside the shower that might interfere with the door's swing radius.

Designing the Perfect Shower Door

GLASS TYPES:

Clear v Low Iron Glass.jpg

When it comes to shower doors, you will need tempered glass for safety, which breaks into small, blunt pieces if shattered. It comes in a variety of options such as clear glass, which allows for maximum light flow and a more open feel, and low-iron glass which minimizes green hues and offers greater transparency. Other options include acid-etched glass for privacy and a frosted look, or digital in-glass printing that can add bespoke designs. Additionally, you could consider Vista Grid/Gridscape options for a more traditional or mullion design. Would you like to explore any of these in more detail? See the vendor links below!

HARDWARE COLORS:

CRL Finishes.gif

Choosing the right hardware color is essential for achieving the desired aesthetic for your shower door. The hardware finish should complement the existing fixtures in your bathroom, such as the faucet, towel bars, and lighting. Popular choices often include Polished Chrome for a sleek, modern look; Brushed Nickel for a warmer, muted tone; or Matte Black to create a striking, contemporary contrast. For a touch of classic elegance, finishes like Satin Brass or Champagne Bronze are excellent options. Ultimately, the choice should harmonize with your overall design palette, whether you are aiming for cohesive continuity or a deliberate, impactful contrast.

HARDWARE STYLES:

Selecting the perfect hardware for your shower door is crucial for both aesthetics and functionality. When choosing, consider the overall style of your bathroom and how the hardware will complement it. Options include rounded edges, which offer a softer, more fluid look that lends itself to both modern and traditional settings. For a more contemporary feel, sharp square edges provide a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Alternatively, decorative beveled edges can add a touch of sophistication or traditional charm, often featuring cut angles that catch the light. Ultimately, the choice of hardware should align with your personal taste and the cohesive look you envision for your bathroom.

Pilkington OptiShower™

Pilkington OptiShower™ is an excellent solution for high humidity environments like showers. Water stains in high humidity environments can be a significant challenge. This occurs when the water starts to pull sodium from the glass and deposits a soda rich scale on the glass. These water stains are an eyesore to the crisp aesthetics of a glass enclosure and are often difficult to clean.

Pilkington OptiShower™ mitigates this by preventing the sodium leaching. This on-line coating is durable enough to withstand tough and even outdoor environments. The coating blocks the water and sodium interactions, effectively eliminating the mechanism that leads to this type of stain formation.

Frequent cleaning and the use of abrasives to manage water stains increases the potential for scratches. The Pilkington OptiShower™ coating eliminates the need for constant cleaning which means you get a cleaner glass enclosure with minimal upkeep.

BriteGuard® Pro

BriteGuard® Pro is a transparent coating for all smooth glass and glazed ceramic surfaces. The coating protects the surface against corrosion and in turn creates an easy to clean surface in which dirt particles and other contaminants cannot adhere to.
Pre-clean, apply, wipe dry, done! The coating is suited for interior applications and lasts for up to 10 years. The coating makes the glass surface hydrophobic and easy to clean. Contaminants such as dirt, limescale and minerals do not adhere to the glass surface and water droplets bead up and roll away. Harsh cleaning products are no longer required to keep the glass clean. Unlike with other coatings on the market, the application of BriteGuard Pro can be easily done through a variety of manual spray systems; there is no need for high priced application systems. Use any non-silicone glass cleaner to prepare the glass for the coating. Simple and easy and cost-effective.
BriteGuard® Pro is the evolution of BriteGuard® Surface Sealer and BriteGuard® Express: It combines the durability and functionality of the BriteGuard® Sealer and the speed of application of the BriteGuard® Express. The best of both products resulting in an outstanding coating for the modern glass professional.
